About Us
The Rainbow Club was started in 2000 by Melissa Hochschild and other adoptive families
who were interested in providing opportunities for their children to be around other kids just like them. It also gave adoptive parents a
chance to socialize in a relaxed environment and share their experiences.
At its inception, 40 families were on the list. Today, over 90 families have signed up to be a part of the club, with
children from Africa (Liberia, Sierra Leone), the Americas (Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, USA), Asia (Cambodia, China, India,
Korea, Nepal, Vietnam), and Europe (Romania, Russia, Ukraine). Valuable and lasting family friendships have been formed thanks to the
original organizers’ insight and energy.
Many of the adoptive parents of The Rainbow Club believe it is essential for their children to feel secure, confident, and
proud of both their cultural backgrounds and their individual adoption journeys. It is known that the repeated interaction with other
adopted children will form strong bonds of kinship and bolster true sense of self. With this, a hand is extended in friendship to gladly
welcome new families into the group.
